Our accomplishments for the year
  • Conducted a Literature Review to develop a guiding definition for social innovation, an overview of common and emerging practices, and a social innovation framework. (link to the literature review)

  • Mapped Vancouver Islands current social innovations and enterprises, finance vehicles, intermediaries and campus assets. This mapping is hosted on Hubcap BC and informed the Assets and Gaps Analysis.

  • Social Innovation Cohort: pairing co- op students from UVic and Camosun with placements in social enterprises or innovation initiatives. Students had the opportunity to gain real world work experience in social innovation, innovators benefitted from the
interest and focus of these students and the post-secondaries provided curriculum and a shared learning platform for all. UVic and Camosun co-op offices provided bursaries to cover 80% of the student salaries. For more information click here.

  • Victoria and Nanaimo hosted Social Innovation Snapshots to share literature and mapping findings. Over 60 participants provided their feedback and recommended next steps. View it here

  • Based on the snapshots and assets and gaps analysis, VISIZ engaged in key informant interviews and Community Consultation process to help hone the key strategic priorities.

  • Social Innovation Symposium invited Vancouver Island faculty and staff to share how the 5 Vancouver Island post-secondaries are advancing social innovation education.  Over 70 attendees shared their experience and ideas at a full day Royal Roads-hosted event.

  • Social Innovation Pitch Showcase brought together 10 student teams from 3 post-secondaries to pitch their social enterprise ideas for seed funds and ongoing mentorship.  Enterprises included an ugly food grocery store, awareness raising for prosthetics and a tool sharing app. Thanks to CityStudio Victoria for hosting!

  • Social Finance Mapping and Forum shared findings from key informant interviews and an environmental scan to local social finance actors. Findings and recommendations soon to be released in an upcoming report.
